Our History

Date of Creation: 2007

The journey of COOU's Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences is marked by a series of remarkable milestones and perseverance. We began admitting medical students in 2003, aiming to cultivate a new wave of healthcare professionals. However, by 2007, the program faced suspension due to limited resources and lack of accreditation.

Rather than halting our mission, we adapted by developing Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) programs in Anatomy and Physiology, ensuring students could continue their education uninterrupted. In 2008, under the visionary leadership of Prof. F.C. Akpuaka, the medical program was successfully reinstated. By 2012, the NUC and the Medical Council officially approved our medical program, allowing for the admission of new MBBS students. Alongside, we launched a Postgraduate Program, underlining our commitment to advanced medical research.

Since our inception, the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences has grown from strength to strength, producing thousands of medical professionals who have gone on to make significant contributions in various sectors of healthcare—from teaching hospitals and research institutions to public health organizations and international health agencies.

Achievements

  • Successfully reinstated the medical program in 2008 under visionary leadership
  • Secured NUC and Medical Council approval for the medical program in 2012
  • Successfully graduated numerous cohorts of medical students
  • Produced B.Sc., MBBS, and postgraduate graduates in Anatomy and Physiology
  • Launched a Postgraduate Program, underlining commitment to advanced medical research
  • Overcame significant challenges to become a cornerstone of medical education in Anambra State
