Prof. I. J. Okafor is the Dean of the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences. A respected academic leader with extensive experience in medical science and education, Prof. Okafor has dedicated his career to advancing the study of human health and medical practice.
Under his guidance, the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences is preparing the next generation of healthcare professionals, driving forward research in medical science and healthcare innovation. Prof. Okafor's leadership continues to ensure the faculty maintains excellence in both teaching and research, while fostering an environment of academic rigor and scientific discovery.
Since its establishment in 2007, the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU) has been a hallmark of academic excellence and medical innovation. We serve as a cornerstone for COOU's mission to provide top-quality medical education and research.
Our faculty is dedicated to training medical professionals who are responsive to the unique healthcare needs of Nigeria. Through a commitment to excellence and continuous improvement, we are preparing the next generation of healthcare leaders, equipped with both knowledge and a sense of purpose.
The journey of COOU's Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences is marked by a series of remarkable milestones and perseverance. We began admitting medical students in 2003, aiming to cultivate a new wave of healthcare professionals. However, by 2007, the program faced suspension due to limited resources and lack of accreditation.
Rather than halting our mission, we adapted by developing Bachelor of Science (BSc.) programs in Anatomy and Physiology, ensuring students could continue their education uninterrupted. In 2008, under the visionary leadership of Prof. F.C. Akpuaka, the medical program was successfully reinstated. By 2012, the NUC and the Medical Council officially approved our medical program, allowing for the admission of new MBBS students. Alongside, we launched a Postgraduate Program, underlining our commitment to advanced medical research.
Leadership has been a defining factor in our faculty's journey. Esteemed deans and department heads have shaped our evolution, bringing unique visions and skills. Notable deans like Prof. F. C. Akpuaka, Prof. W. C. Nwafia, Prof. P. O. Ughachukwu, Prof. I. J. Okafor, Prof. F. N. Ogwuike, and Prof. I. J. Okafor have contributed immensely to our development.
Departmental leaders like Prof. W. C. Nwafia, Dr. P. Ogugua, and Dr. A. A. Nwakanma in Anatomy, and Dr. C. M. Nwozor and Rev. Sr. Dr. C. N. Dim in Physiology have diligently overseen their departments, ensuring academic integrity, research growth, and student engagement. These leaders have infused the faculty with a commitment to professional and academic standards, nurturing future healthcare leaders.
To integrate foundational medical knowledge into students' lives and produce graduates poised to contribute meaningfully to Nigeria's healthcare system.
