Department of Anatomy - A Beacon of Excellence in Medical Education

The Department of Anatomy stands as a cornerstone of academic excellence within the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU). Since its inception in 2007, the department has consistently contributed to the advancement of medical education, research, and professional development in Nigeria.

We have not only trained over 1,000 graduates but have also expanded our horizons to embrace cutting-edge trends in anatomy education. With a vision to be a leader in anatomy education and research, we have established ourselves as a nurturing ground for future healthcare professionals.

History of the Department of Anatomy - A Foundation of Progress

The Department of Anatomy was officially created in 2007 as one of the pioneering departments in COOU's Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences. From the outset, we have demonstrated a clear focus on academic excellence and the advancement of anatomical sciences in Nigeria.

Key historical milestones include the admission of our first cohort of anatomy students in 2007, marking the beginning of our journey towards academic distinction. In 2009, we celebrated the graduation of our pioneer class, who have become influential professionals in healthcare and academia. By 2021, we achieved full accreditation by relevant regulatory bodies, cementing our status as a trusted institution for anatomy education. The establishment of a postgraduate program further expanded our academic reach and opened new pathways for advanced research and specialized training.

We have grown exponentially, graduating over 1,000 students since inception, and establishing ourselves as one of the premier anatomy departments in Nigeria. The leadership of various Heads of Department (HODs) has been instrumental in this growth, including Prof. W. C. Nwafia, Dr. P. Ogugua, Prof. I. J. Okafor, Dr. A. A. Nwakanma, Dr. E. O. Nweke, Dr. I. S. Etoniru, and Dr. Stanley E. Elemuo (Current HOD).
